Why Mumbai and the Global South
Why Mumbai as the host city?
Mumbai is the ideal host as a dynamic megacity from the Global South, positioned to demonstrate climate leadership. Key reasons include:
- First Mover in Climate Action: Its dense population and coastal geography make it a frontline city; it was the first Indian city to launch a Climate Action Plan.
- Financial Powerhouse: Home to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), National Stock Exchange (NSE), and major multinational corporations.
- Cultural and Media Capital: India’s media hub with vibrant arts, theatre, music, and festivals.
- International Standing: A strong presence in global climate forums, positioning it as a leading voice from the Global South.
Why the focus on the Global South?
The Global South faces disproportionate climate impacts despite contributing less to emissions. MCW amplifies voices, solutions, and collaborations from these regions, fostering resilience through shared knowledge and scalable initiatives. It positions Mumbai as a bridge for Global South leadership in global climate discourse, particularly ahead of events like COP30.
Vision and Objectives
What is the vision of Mumbai Climate Week?
MCW’s vision is to create a lasting climate legacy for the Global South by empowering climate-resilient communities & focussed citizen-driven climate action for the region through inclusive collaboration, shared knowledge, and targeted action.
What are the objectives of Mumbai Climate Week?
MCW’s primary objective is to identify and scale high-impact initiatives and solutions that address climate change in priority areas, fostering measurable outcomes for communities in the Global South. These initiatives and solutions are evaluated through the lenses of Justice, Innovation, and Funding, championing climate adaptation and resilience alongside mitigation practices. By addressing the trade-offs between development indicators and climate action, MCW tackles the unique challenges faced by developing nations.
What is the guiding philosophy of Mumbai Climate Week?
MCW’s guiding philosophy centers on going “narrow and deep” in high-impact areas where development priorities overlap with climate action. It emphasizes system-wide solutions that prioritize justice (impact at population scale and affordability), innovation (novel approaches to overcome barriers), and funding (readiness to attract commercial and/or development finance). The event design focuses on maximizing impact through inclusive, action-oriented engagement rather than broad discussions.
Themes and Focus Areas
What are the key themes for Mumbai Climate Week?
For its inaugural edition, MCW focuses on three high-impact themes:
- Food Systems: Addressing climate change impacts on food systems, with sub-themes including water, food waste, and green financing.
- Energy Transition: Exploring effective energy shifts for climate action, with sub-themes including green energy sources and electricity access.
- Urban Resilience: Strengthening cities against climate-related challenges, with sub-themes including urban heat and air pollution.
Under each theme, solutions are showcased in four categories: commercial business/startups, development initiatives (NGO-led), policy/program initiatives (government-led), and behavior change (community/CSO-led).
Why these three themes?
These interconnected themes were carefully selected because they represent areas where development priorities in the Global South overlap most significantly with climate action needs. They allow for deep exploration of system-wide solutions that can be scaled for real impact, addressing critical challenges like population density, resource access, and urban vulnerabilities. By focusing narrowly, MCW aims to drive meaningful progress rather than superficial coverage.
What does "Justice" mean in the context of MCW themes?
Justice refers to solutions that deliver widespread impact while remaining affordable and accessible to underserved communities. It prioritizes equitable outcomes for marginalized groups in the Global South, promoting inclusive climate action.
What does "Innovation" mean in the context of MCW themes?
Innovation involves novel approaches that solve existing hurdles or barriers in climate action. Solutions must introduce creative methods, technologies, or strategies to address challenges in food systems, energy transition, and urban resilience effectively.
What does "Funding" mean in the context of MCW themes?
Funding refers to a solution’s readiness to attract commercial or development financing. It emphasizes investment-ready initiatives that demonstrate scalability through partnerships with capital providers.
Format and Model
What is the model and format of Mumbai Climate Week?
MCW follows a hub-and-spoke model through Core Event & Peripheral Gatherings to maximize reach and impact:

- Peripheral Events & gatherings: Independently-organized citywide events aligned with MCW themes, held before and during the main event, such as workshops, exhibitions, film screenings, food festivals, tree plantations, street plays, and pop-up events.
This format is co-delivered with multiple partners to build a cohesive climate action ecosystem.
How are events structured during the week?
The three-day Core event at JWCC includes sessions (keynotes, plenaries, innovation showcases) at the main hub and diverse, community-driven activities & gatherings at peripheral events and gatherings (locations in Mumbai and across other cities). These events are designed for collaboration, offering in-person, hybrid, or virtual participation.
